Cry Freedom: The Legendary and Explosive True Story of Steve Biko and Donald Woods.
Steve Biko was the black South African who died a martyr to the cause of freedom for his people and Donald Woods, a white anti-apartheid South African newspaper editor. They became close friends.

The novel begins with Woods editorial criticizing Bikos Black Consciousness Movement and calling him - the ugly menace of black racism. Biko requests a meeting with Woods, a meeting which must be held in security. When Woods sees how the blacks live, he begins to understand what Biko stands for. He realizes that it is not enough just to be a liberal in South Africa; he must actively support Bikos movement.
The men become close friends.
After Biko’s imprisonment, torture and murder, Woods’ own commitment to proving that his friend’s death was murder by the government, leads to his being forced to flee the country. But Woods is able to smuggle out the book that inspired the film.
